1 Hear this, all peoples; Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
2 Both low and high, Rich and poor together.
3 My mouth shall speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.
5 Why should I fear in the days of evil, When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
("the days of evil" one writes the days of old age, as they are called, ( Ecclesiastes 12:1 ) , which bring on diseases, weakness, and death; yet the one who trusts in the Messiah, Jesus Christ is the only name who delivers one from death: days of evil could also be referring to the second death where the wicked are cast into the lake of fire:(AD)
6 Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches, (
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him--
8 For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever--
(The only price of redemption of the soul is the precious blood of Christ; his life is the ransom price, yea, he himself, ( 1 Peter 1:18 1 Peter 1:19 ) ( Matthew 20:28 ) ( 1 Timothy 2:6 ) ; nor is the redemption of the soul possible upon any other ground; JG)
9 That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.
(the grave or hell eternally absent from the presence of the Lord and Glory of His power) and though the wicked man in old age has reason to be afraid of death and eternity at hand, the saint has not; but may sing, on the borders of the grave, "O death! where is thy sting?" Also days in which iniquity abounds, and error and heresy prevail, are days of evil; Yet the righteous man need not fear; the day of death, and the day of judgment are days of evil to wicked men; and therefore they put them away far from them, ( Amos 6:3 ); but believers have reason to rejoice at them, the day of their death being better than the day of their birth; and the day of judgment will be the time of the glorious appearing of Christ to them. (JG)
10 For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others.
He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Is. 53:6-7 written over 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ)
11 Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.
Yet they shall hear "this very night your life shall be demanded of you." (Luke 12:20)
And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” (Luke 7:22-23)
12 Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.
(and when they die, they perish like the beasts; as they are like them in life, stupid, brutish, and ignorant, so in death; as the beast dies, so do they. It is worse with them than with the beasts, since after death comes judgment, and after that the second death, the wrath of God.) (JG)
13 This is the way of those who are foolish, And of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah
(They listen to and follow worldly wisdom. A widom that can not keep one from the eternal flames of God's wrath. God's people are not to venerate the things of this world which are the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and boasting of what we say and do. God's promised redeemer has come. He healed the sick, raised the dead. Those who have the Son have life. Those who have not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abide on them. (AD)
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; Death shall feed on them; The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, far from their dwelling.
(this should be understood of "hell" , which will be the everlasting mansion of wicked men, and in which they will be punished in soul and body for ever; JG)
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me. Selah
(such whom Christ receives by his grace, he will redeem from the grave, or raise at the last day to the resurrection of life: or, "for he will receive me"; as he does the souls of his people to glory at death, when, during their separate state, they will be happy with him, and takes their bodies into his care and custody; from whence it may be strongly concluded he will raise them up again at the resurrection morn, and then will receive them soul and body to himself, and present them to his Father, and introduce them into his kingdom and glory; (JG)
16 Do not be afraid when one becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased;
(men are apt to glory in them, and for the most part obtain honour and glory from men by them; but beware for riches can not save one unto eternal life; to be truly rich one one must receive by God's grace the gift of salvation. The desire to repent, confess, believe in who Jesus was/is/forever will be. The Word who was in the beginning with God and was God. The Word who became flesh, lived the perfect sinless life that fallen sinful mankind can not. That we too may have Jesus righteousness imputed to us. By grace through faith, a gift from God not of works. To be given citzenship in heaven; born again not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13)AD
17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.
The old adage you can't take it will you is absolutely correct. The things of this world unreachable to the dead. Everything a person has worked for, earned, saved for, strived for out of their reach when they die.
(either into the grave, the pit of corruption, the lower part of the earth, where kings, princes, counsellors, and peasants, are all alike, ( Job 3:14 Job 3:15 Job 3:19 ) ; or into hell, where are no titles of honour, nor respect of persons; no Pharaoh king of Egypt, or Sennacherib king of Assyria, there; but plain Pharaoh see ( Ezekiel 32:31 Ezekiel 32:32 ) JG.
8 Though while he lives he blesses himself (For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see light.
20 A man who is in honor, yet does not understand,
(where from his riches and honour, come, and what use he should make of them, and for what end he has them; or that understands not spiritual things, which relate to the salvation of his soul; who does not know God in Christ, nor the way of salvation by Christ; nor has any experience of the work of the Spirit of God upon his soul; nor has any spiritual understanding of the doctrines of the Gospel; nor knows himself, his state and condition, and what true happiness is:
Is like the beasts that perish.
Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth? (Ecc. 3:21 NKJV)
if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-13)
